＊University: Students study in university for 4 years. The students will receive a bachelor’s degree upon completion of their 4 years. There are other fields that require 6 years of education, such as Medical, Pharmaceutical, Dental and Veterinarian studies. The students that are eligible to enter into university are those who have graduated from high school, have achieved a level of education similar to high school graduates, or who have passed a special exam (called “Koutou Gakkou Sotsugyou Teido Nintei Shiken” in Japanese. Refer to the next page for more information on this exam.) to prove that their academic abilities are equivalent to high school graduates.
Koutou Gakkou Sotsugyou Teido Nintei Shiken : This exam is taken by students who have not graduated from high school. It is used to measure whether they have achieved the same level of education as a student who has graduated from high school. This exam used to be called “Daigaku Nyuugaku Shikaku Kentei.” Whoever passes this exam is qualified to apply for entry into universities, junior colleges, or vocational schools.
＊Junior College: In junior college, students study for 2 years. Upon completion of their 2 years, students will receive an associate’s degree. The students that are eligible to enter into junior college are those who have graduated from high school, have achieved a level of education similar to high school graduates, or who have passed a special exam to prove that their academic abilities are equivalent to high school graduates.

＊Vocational School: Students will study in vocational school for 1-4 years depending on their field
of study. These schools are intended for students who wish to work in a field that requires
specialized knowledge and training. Students who qualify for entry into vocational school can
vary, depending on each individual school. There are 3 kinds of vocational schools.
（１） Senmon Gakkou (Senmon Katei): This is a vocational/technical college for students who have graduated from high school or who have graduated from a specialized technical high school called “Koutou Senshuu Gakkou” in Japanese.
（２） Koutou Senshuu Gakkou (Koutou Katei): This is a special kind of high school dedicated to providing students with training in specific vocational/technical skills. Students who have graduated from junior high school are eligible for enrollment. Currently, there are none within Yamanashi prefecture.
（３） Ippan Katei: This is a general vocational school with no eligibility requirements. Anyone is free to enroll, regardless of education background.
