3.Costs Associated with Taking Exams, Entering into School, Student Living Expenses and Available Scholarships

Regarding application for university admission, in addition to preparing to take any tests, students will also need to pay for the enrollment and tuition fees. Once a student has been accepted into university, it is the student’s responsibility to pay for any costs associated with textbooks or school supplies at the beginning of the semester.

Table 1 on the following page contains information concerning enrollment and tuitions fees for universities in Yamanashi prefecture. The information detailed, however, is subject to change, so please check directly with any universities about these costs. The costs to attend a university can be quite high, but scholarships and grants are available for students who may be struggling financially. Universities may also give discounts or waive any fees for students with financial difficulties.

Additionally, various companies and organizations also provide grants and scholarships. For more information, refer to table 2.

ScholarshipsJapan Student Services Organization ScholarshipThis is the most widely-used scholarship in Japan. While this is referred to as a scholarship, it actually functions like a loan. All scholarships are required to be paid back in full. There are two kinds of scholarships. One which accrues no rates of interest, while the other does. The no-interest scholarship is harder to receive.

Privately Owned Organization ScholarshipsThese scholarships are awarded by privately-owned, non-governmental organizations and businesses. Some organizations and companies take scholarship applications on a yearly basis, while others only offer them periodically. The requirements to receive these scholarships can vary depending on the awarding organization (i.e. a particular company will only award students studying a very specific field, or another organization might award only academically gifted students.)

Newspaper Dealer Companies and Stores loans or scholarshipsThese loans or scholarships are issued by companies and stores that deal in newspapers. Students can receive these scholarships by working for companies or stores that sell newspapers or newspaper subscriptions. Some work that students must do includes delivering door-to-door newspapers daily, or collecting money from subscribers.
