4.Mensalidade escolar do kouko

■ In Public schools, tuition is free. However, the costs of school supplies (textbooks, workbooks, etc.) P.E. uniforms and school trips are not covered. Students will be required to cover the costs of all of these.

■ For private schools, the cost of the enrollment fee is usually 140,000 yen. There is also a facility usage fee which is usually an additional 140,000 yen. The cost for tuition is usually 15,000 yen per month. Students who attend private schools will also be required to cover the costs for school uniforms, textbooks and school field trips, etc. Combined with other expenses, the total cost per month will usually be between 40,000 to 50,000 yen.

★Explanation of Japanese Words and Terminology

* Shutsukan:The process of submitting an application of enrollment to a high school that a student wishes to attend.

*Sansha Kondan:This is a consultation session between students, their parents and the junior high school’s teachers about students plans once they graduate from junior high school. If a student or his/her parents do not understand Japanese, an interpreter will be provided.

*Saiboshuu:When a high school is not able to enroll enough students into the school, the school will then begin a second period in which they will start taking applications again.

*Open Campus:This is a day when high schools will permit prospective students to attend the school for one day. Prospective students will be able to participate in various activities such as attending classes, observing various club activities and meet with school faculty and teachers.
